Internet dialogue between Dawkins and McGrath
Friday 8 June 2007

If you do a google search for Dawkins and McGrath you will find a lengthy videoplay of a dialogue between Richard Dawkins and Oxford theologian Alister McGrath. It is difficult to summarise such a lengthy dialogue. It appeared to be unedited. Dawkins was holding in his hand Alister´s
book "Dawkins´ God" and during most of the interview Dawkins interviewed Alister. At times there were pauses when both men turned to the cameraman/producer and agreed what topic they would cover
next. Both men were happy at times to concede strong points in the
other man´s argument. At one point, Dawkins admitted that he may
have been unfair to or misrepresented one particular theological
position. Towards the end of the interview, Alister asked whether he
might ask Dawkins a question. This was agreed and the question was
along the lines of: "We have had a reasoned discussion. There is
also much that is reasonable in your books. But your books also
display a degree of underlying anger. Why are you so angry about
religion?" Dawkins paused and then came up with an answer in which
his supporters will say he was at his most devastating best. If you
had been in the room where the interview was recorded I think you
would have said that you could hear a pin drop during this answer.
No response from Alister is included in the version of the interview
which I watched. Supporters of Dawkins will have reason to feel that
Dawkins ended the interview winning on points at this point.
