Richard Dawkins and The God Delusion
Tuesday 31 October 2006
I have bought "The God Delusion" by Richard Dawkins and have read it
rather carefully. I have already written several pages of notes on what
I see as the stronger and weaker parts of the book. Apart from some
rather amateurish passages where Dawkins discusses some of the
traditional arguments for the existence of God, a great deal of the book is devoted to a spirited attack on the practice of religion --
particularly what is often known as fundamentalist religion whether
Islamic or Christian. We could debate the definition and history of the
word "fundamentalism" -- but in practice I think most of us have a fair
understanding of how the word is popularly used and the type of religion
which it describes. It is in these parts of the book that Dawkins´
arrows often come close to hitting their target. I think it would do no
harm for thoughtful Christians and Muslims to read these passages and
reflect.
