News from China
Tuesday 15 August 2006

It was a delightful surprise today to receive an email from James Hudson Taylor III, great-grandson of the Hudson Taylor who founded the China Inland Mission (now OMF) and whose biography I wrote twenty years ago. I met him once in 1990 and dedicated my second book about Hudson Taylor to him. It was Jim (as he is known to his friends) who flew to America with a copy of my manuscript and persuaded Billy Graham to write the Foreword to the book.

Jim tells me that Joseph Tarn, one of the founders of Bible Society, was grandfather of Maria Dyer Taylor, his great grandmother (the first Hudson Taylor’s wife). I was able to tell him about references to Tarn in my own history of the Bible Society and faxed him a tribute to him in George Browne’s history of the Society. Jim tells me that over the past two years his son Jamie and he have taken about 100 copies of a simplified Chinese script edition of “A Man in Christ” to Zhenjiang (where Hudson Taylor and Maria are buried) for the pastor of the official church there to distribute.
