God and The Queen Mother
Saturday 19 September 2009

I see that in his new biography of the Queen Mother, published by Macmillan, Willaim Shawcross says that she ´had a consuming interest in other people, a deep love of God and a total commitment to Britain and the Commonwealth´. In a phrase which will cause some amusement, Shawcross also speaks of her ´appreciation of the value of a restorative drink´.

As for her deep love of God, I quote her in my new biography of John Stott (Inside Story, published by IVP yesterday) as saying ‘I can truly say that the King and I long to
see the Bible back where it ought to be as a guide and comfort in the
homes and lives of our people.’ Inside Story has a photography of John Stott with the Queen Mother when she attended a nurses´ Carols by Candlelight service at All Souls, Langham Place, the church where he was Rector from 1950 to 1970 (and is still Rector Emeritus) as well as being a Chaplain to the present Queen.
