What is faith?
Monday 9 February 2009
In the course of a discussion on the Christians in Science internet list I made the following observation about faith: Faith involves commitment at times to things which can neither be
seen nor proved. There is all the difference in the world between that which cannot be proved on the one hand, and that which can be disproved beyond reasonable doubt on the other. Faith is highly unlikely to involve or require commitment to ideas which are contrary to the findings of peer-
reviewed science. Faith has nothing to do with believing six impossible things before breakfast. Thus the Christian who is interested in science retains his or her intellectual integrity. The processes involved in the pursuit of truth are the same for the Christian and the non-Christian. And truth, while difficult to find
and often beyond our reach, is indivisible. I should welcome any comments from readers of this blog.
